Harris County Through the Looking Glass

In Alice Through the Looking-Glass, author Lewis Carroll created a sequel to Alice in Wonderland.  Alice climbs through a mirror and enters a world beyond the one she can normally see.  Everything there is reversed, just like a reflection in a mirror -- even logic itself.  In this bizarre reality, running helps one remain stationary, while walking away actually brings one closer.

In 2019, Harris County, Texas entered its own "looking glass," where logic and reason are similarly reversed.  This new world sprang into existence as a result of a settlement in the federal class action case of ODonnell v. Harris County.  Through this agreement the public has been told that simply releasing criminal defendants without accountability will make everyone safer, even though it is creating more crime.  They have also been informed that the growing numbers of failures to appear are not the cause of the increasing numbers of pending cases, although they are.  And they were advised that the escalating number of confrontations between law enforcement officers and individuals who fail to appear is not related to the settlement, despite the fact that it came about as a direct result.  When up is down and down is up, it does not take long to realize you are in a world that has taken a break from reality.

Episode No. 74- Study: Defunding the Police Increase Murders Especially for Minorities with Guest Dr. Ben Hansen

Dr. Benjamin Hansen is the W.E. Minor Professor of Economics at the University of Oregon.  He is also the head of the Economics Department.  He Graduated from Birmingham Young University in 2004 with a B.A. in Economics.  He received his M.A. in Economics in 2005 and his PhD in Economics in 2009 from UC Santa Barbara. Dr. Hansen co-authored an article that is the subject of this episode of The Bail Post.  The citation for the article is:  Chalfin, Hansen, Weisburst and Williams, "Police Force Size and Civilian Race,"  American Economic Review:  Insights 4 (2); 139-58 (2022). Is 2024 the Year of the Woman for the Professional Bondsmen of Texas?  At the recent annual meeting, Irma Montemayor was elected president of PBT.  She will serve for the next two years.  She is only the third woman to be elected President.  She has been involved in the bonding industry since she was 18. PBT's Much Loved Executive Director, Susie Cannon, Announces Retirment

Susie Cannon is like family, a much loved and honored family member.  She knows where everything is.  She knows all the family (PBT) stories.  She ensures that the family keeps moving forward.  If you call the PBT phone number, until recently, you spoke to Susie.  If you went to a continuing education class,  you interacted with Susie.  If you had a problem that needed to be solved you spoke to Suzie.  For many years, she has ensured that our continuing education school has been properly approved by the State Bar of Texas.  She ensures that our quarterly meetings, our annual meetings and so many other things are taken care of and are simply done.  We are probably not aware of all the things that Susie does for us and will not know all of them until after says her final goodbyes at the PBT Annual meeting Octboer 11-13, 2023.
