Washington Passed Insane “Police Reform”; Crime Skyrocketed. So They Changed Their Minds And Are Trying To Take It Back

Image
In 2021, the Washington state legislators passed several police “reform” bills that Governor Jay Inslee signed into law. These new requirements in the state covered everything from police background checks in the hiring process to which circumstances could lead to an officer being decertified. Each of the acts stemmed from activities that started in 2020 after the death of George Floyd. Seattle was one of the cities that saw civil unrest violence and extreme lawlessness. There was even a section of the city that was declared an “autonomous zone”. Police were forced out of their own precinct building and members of the zone’s leadership extorted business owners and residents by offering “protection.” We covered the bills that Inslee signed in May of 2021. It took less than a year for the state to reverse some of those limitations they placed on law enforcement. Even the Democrat lawmakers who sponsored last year’s reform bill said that it went too far and made it harder for the police t...

Supreme Court Rejects Restriction on Qualified Immunity for Police

Image
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Monday in favor of Oklahoma police officers who were accused of using excessive force after fatally shooting a man who raised a hammer behind his head, “and took a stance as if he was about to throw the hammer or charge at the officers.” The Court held that the officers are entitled to qualified immunity. * * * After a federal trial court held in a summary judgment that the officers’ use of force was reasonable, and that qualified immunity protected the officers from personal financial liability, a panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit reversed. * * * But the Supreme Court disagreed, stating, “The officers plainly did not violate any clearly established law,” and that qualified immunity protects “all but the plainly incompetent or those who knowingly violate the law.” “We have repeatedly told courts not to define clearly established law at too high a level of generality,” the Supreme Court added. “It is not enough that a rule be sug...

Lenient Policing Has Been A Fiasco: What Happens With No Accountability

Image
After looters struck downtown Chicago on Sunday night, officials literally raised the bridges to prevent rioting hordes from roaming so easily. They also blocked road access and stopped public transit. So, we have come to this: a major American city is replicating the strategy of medieval castles: flood the moats and raise the drawbridges. All that is missing are crenelated battlements and Welsh longbowmen. In Portland, officials aren’t even raising the drawbridges. After more than 70 nights of rioting, Mayor Ted Wheeler’s strategy seems to be, “If you insist on doing this, we might write a strong letter.” He has stopped short of repeating what Monty Python’s French knight told invaders at his castle, “Go away or I will taunt you a second time.” Mayor Wheeler hasn’t taunted them a first time. After looters struck downtown Chicago on Sunday night, officials literally raised the bridges to prevent rioting hordes from roaming so easily. They also blocked road access and stoppe...

Chicago Looters Smash Ronald McDonald House with Terrified Sick Kids Inside

Image
Sick kids and their families cowered in fear inside a Chicago Ronald McDonald House as looters smashed the front door while trying to get inside this week, according to staff. The charity says more than 30 families, as well as some sick children with them, were left “frightened” by those who smashed windows as they ransacked the Windy City during Monday’s chaotic crime spree. “They very concerned there was a lot of activity right in front of the house, people making choices that could put them at risk and put our families at risk so the staff was frightened,” Ronald McDonald House Charities’ Lisa Mitchell told ABC7. The attacked property houses families so they and their children can be close to Lurie Children’s Hospital, which should be an easy and safe trip just five blocks away. “They are already in a really, really difficult spot, and having this kind of additional stress and worry about getting to and from the hospital … because of safety concerns is just doubl...

Chicago UPDATE- Outnumbered and Unprepared, 18 Police Officers Hurt Regarding Christopher Columbus Statute Protest

Image
Eighteen Chicago Police officers were injured in a protest Friday, the department said in a statement. A large group gathered for a protest around 4:20 p.m. local time, the department said. Officers were there "providing security and protecting their First Amendment right to peaceful assembly," the statement said. Approaching a statue of Christopher Columbus, some people in the crowd used rocks, fireworks, frozen bottles and other objects to attack officers, the statement said. The attack resulted in 18 officers injured, the statement said. Some were taken to area hospitals by paramedics for further treatment and some were treated at the scene. About 12 people were arrested and could potentially face charges that may include battery to a police officer, mob action, and/or other felonies, according to the statement. 'We were outnumbered and unprepared,' officer says. A veteran Chicago Police officer said Saturday some police officers felt they weren't ready for Fri...

Black Community Leaders Ask NYPD to Return Plainclothes Anti-Crime Unit

Image
Nearly one month ago the New York Police Department announced that it was disbanding its anti-crime unit of approximately 600 plainclothes police officers, Law Officer reported. Their job was to blend in with the general population and to combat crime, particularly getting guns off the streets. However, some claimed it had been stoking distrust with law enforcement in minority communities. Yet the loudest voices were always those aligned with people committing crimes. “This is a seismic shift in the culture of how the NYPD polices this great city,” Commissioner Dermot Shea said in a statement at the time. “I would consider this in the realm of closing one of the last chapters of ‘Stop, Question and Frisk’… I think it’s time to move forward and change how we police in this city. We can do it with brains. We can do it with guile. We can move away from brute force.” Shea conceded that the decision does not come without “risk” and said the move is “squarely on my shoulders,” as it occurred...

New Hampshire Passes Law Rolling Back Portions of Previous Bail Reform Bill

Image
Gov. Chris Sununu signed a criminal justice bill Thursday that bans chokeholds by police officers and requires them to report misconduct. The governor said the bill will move New Hampshire in the right direction, ensuring transparency and prohibiting private prisons in the state. The bill bans choke-holds and requires the reporting of misconduct. The bill also takes additional steps in bail reform to make it easier to detain dangerous defendants. "Pretty early on, I think everyone realized that (bail reform) wasn't right," Sununu said. "We could've done a much better job, and we really tasked the legislature to go back, work with stakeholders and find solutions, and a lot of those reforms are in this bill, as well." The bill adds a bail commissioner to the Commission on Pretrial Detention and provides immunity from arrest or prosecution for some alcoholic beverage violations. The new law also requires psychological screening for law enforcement trainees befo...

Woman Arrested for Bashing Multiple Officers Described as "Kind, Generous and Peaceful"

Image
The woman accused of bashing police officers with a wooden cane on the Brooklyn Bridge this week was ordered held on $7,500 bail during her Friday morning arraignment. When Officer Antonio Torres tried to arrest her, she kicked him and locked her arms — prompting Torres to request help from other cops, according to the complaint. “The defendant then bit one of the arresting officers in the head,” Khazly said. The woman was brought to the 5th Precinct station house in Lower Manhattan, where she was escorted out in handcuffs and leg irons and put into an ambulance shortly after noon. Exclusive video shows that although her wrists were shackled behind her back, she managed to work her hands around to flip the bird at reporters. Asked to explain her alleged actions on the bridge, the woman — who wore a shirt saying “WANTED” in yellow letters — denied any involvement in Wednesday’s incident. “I didn’t attack nobody,” she said. Reyes has been charged with second-degree assault, obstructing g...

NYP Commissioner "The World Seems Like It's Upside Down"

Image
City officials mount a sharp attacked on the court system after a man accused of attacking several cops – including Chief of Department Terence Monahan — was released without bail. “I think the world like this at times seems like it’s upside down,” Police Commissioner Dermot Shea said. “There needs to be consequences for people who just have no regard for the law.” “To see someone assault him, the chief of department, is absolutely unacceptable. Assaulting any police officer is absolutely unacceptable. There have to be consequences and I say we need to have the court system to be up and running,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said. The comments came at a press conference where  the mayor and the police commissioner unveiled a new plan to deal with the city’s spiraling gun violence. Both had the court system squarely in the crosshairs. They have a litany of complaints, claiming those arrested for gun crimes are free to roam the streets and shoot again because, they say, courts have been clos...

Man Who Beat NYPD Chief of Police and 2 Other Officers Released for Free Without Bail

Image
The man who allegedly beat a top official in the New York City Police Department and two other police officers this week was released from jail without bail. “Quran Campbell, 25, is accused of socking the highest-ranking uniformed cop [NYPD Chief Terence Monahan] several times in the face as Monahan tried to arrest him after Campbell had allegedly punched another NYPD officer and lieutenant” near the Manhattan approach to the Brooklyn Bridge, The New York Post reported. The Post noted that a second man, 25-year-old Banks Shaborn, was also arrested for allegedly “clocking the same lieutenant, Richard Mack, of the department’s Strategic Response Group, multiple times in the face during the scuffle.” Both of Mack’s orbital bones were reportedly broken during the attack. “They are part of this anarchist group that has been infiltrating this Black Lives movement since the beginning,” Monahan said. “This is what we dealt with since the first protest after George Floyd. It is a legitimate mov...

Father of Black Teen Killed in CHOP Devastated

Image
Horace Lorenzo Anderson, the father of a 19-year-old black teen shot and killed inside Seattle’s Capitol Hill Occupied Protest (CHOP) is speaking out. Horace Lorenzo Anderson, Jr., was the first person killed in CHOP, more than a week ago, during an outbreak of gun violence inside of the “autonomous zone.” Anderson’s father, Anderson, Sr., spoke late Monday, after another black teen, this time a 16-year old, was killed in the CHOP over the weekend, and a 14-year-old left wounded. “I ain’t been sleeping. You see my eyes. I’ve been crying. I’m trying not to cry on TV,” Anderson said in the Monday press conference, according to KIRO Seattle. “This doesn’t look like a protest to me no more,” said Anderson. “That just looks like they just took over and said we can take over whenever we want to.” Since last week, at least two people have been killed and several others wounded in CHOP gun violence. And although Seattle’s mayor Jenny Durkan has pledged to bring an end to the demonstration, whi...

Powerlingblog Commentary- The city council has taken up the charge to abolish/defund the police. The Minneapolis city charter actually requires the council to fund a police department at something approaching its current size. The council has thus undertaken the process necessary to amend the charter. Last week the council voted unanimously to advance a proposal that would substitute a new Department of Community Safety and Violence Prevention for the police department. I have embedded the text of the ordinance adopted with the proposed charter. The charter amendment would have to be placed before the voters for adoption in order to become law The Star Tribune story on the proposed amendment by Liz Navarati is vague on the text of the charter amendment. Navarati’s story includes a video of Mayor Frey’s criticism of the proposed amendment. It would be going too far to say that the boy mayor is the adult in the room, but at some level he is in touch with the reality principle. Steve Karn...

Protesters Demand Police Protection for Their Safety at Defund Police Rally

Image
Over the weekend, a video of a police officer went viral. In that video, an unidentified police officer explains that he was called to provide security for protesters. The irony, the officer explained, is that the protesters requested police presence for a...wait for it..."defund the police" rally. "So I come in this morning and we're informed there's gonna be a protest to 'defund the police.' Well, that's fine, I like protests," the officer explained. "Except they requested a police presence, you know, for their safety, at the 'defund the police' event," he continued. "I s**t you not."  See the video below: “They requested a police presence, you know, for their safety at the ‘defund the police’ event.” pic.twitter.com/oPQmQlbAXK — Eddie Zipperer (@EddieZipperer) June 27, 2020

Giving Into Mob Rule- Minneapolis Votes to Dismantle the Police With No Alternative Plan to Protect the Public

Image
While crime skyrockets in Minneapolis & public support for the Defund The Police movement sits at a measly 24%,  the City Council in Minneapolis continues to push their irrational plan to dismantle the police with no tangible details for their community.   Who will step into the void?  Who is going to prevent organized crime and gangs from doing it?  Not the Minneapolis City Council.  See video below-

NYC Criminal Justice System "Imploding" As a Result of Bail Reform

Image
New York City’s homicide rate has hit a five-year high as the amount of people shot has jumped 42 percent compared to last year on the heels of an “implosion” of the city’s judicial system, according to NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea. A perfect storm of COVID-19 shutdowns within the judicial system (which have shunted indictments against the most dangerous illegal gun criminals), a breakdown in the city’s social safety nets (which has prisoners being released from jail straight into homelessness), and bail reform laws and case deferments have all hindered the NYPD’s efforts to staunch the bleeding, Shea believes. "We cannot keep people safe without keeping bad, dangerous, people off the streets,” Shea said. "You have a criminal justice system that's imploding. That’s the kindest way to put it.” * * * * * Shea summed up his thoughts bluntly: “The people who are suffering are the people in New York City.” Compared to the same week last year, NYPD crime data shows the total n...

Know What We are Facing: What Are The Advocates Arguments for Criminal Justice Reform?

Image
A recent article from the New York Times is a good illustration of the arguments being made by advocates for criminal justice reform.  Here are the key points from the article: You should make a commitment never to call the police no matter what happens: After the death of George Floyd at the hands of the police, Ms. Albers, who is white, and many of her progressive neighbors vowed to avoid calling law enforcement into their community.  Doing so, they believed, would add to the pain that black residents of Minneapolis were feeling and could put them in danger. Your commitment will be a magnet for lawbreakers including people who suffer from mental illness and drug addiction:   Two weeks ago, dozens of multicolored tents appeared in the neighborhood park. The multiracial group of roughly 300 new residents seems to grow larger and more entrenched every day.  Some are hampered by mental illness, addiction or both. They do laundry, listen to music and strategiz...

Wrongfully Accused by an Algorithm

Image
This is the first known account of an American being wrongfully arrested based on a flawed match from a facial recognition algorithm, according to experts on technology and the law. On a Thursday afternoon in January, Robert Julian-Borchak Williams was in his office at an automotive supply company when he got a call from the Detroit Police Department telling him to come to the station to be arrested. He thought at first that it was a prank. An hour later, when he pulled into his driveway in a quiet subdivision in Farmington Hills, Mich., a police car pulled up behind, blocking him in. Two officers got out and handcuffed Mr. Williams on his front lawn, in front of his wife and two young daughters, who were distraught. The police wouldn’t say why he was being arrested, only showing him a piece of paper with his photo and the words “felony warrant” and “larceny.” His wife, Melissa, asked where he was being taken. “Google it,” she recalls an officer replying. The police drove Mr. Williams ...
