The Economic Impact of Bad Bail Reform by Eric Granof Vice President of Corporate Communications for AIA Surety (This article was original published in the California Political Review on 1/6/2023) Over the past decade we have seen a variety of soft-on-crime policies enacted throughout the nation that has not only made our streets less safe, they have placed an unnecessary and devastating financial burden on our small businesses and communities.  They have all been based on several assumptions by advocates behind the changes.  First, that generally people are good and that they will come to court without someone, such as a private surety bondsmen, watching over them.  Second, that more criminals can be released from jail without having an impact on public safety. The subsequent reforms have included everything from "zero bail" policies to the defunding of law enforcement and reducing certain felony offenses to misdemeanor offenses.  The results have been disastrou

  The first season for The Bail Post ended on December 31, 2022.  During Season 1, The Bail Post released 25 episodes.  The top four episodes of Season 1 were as follows: Number 4- Episode No. 6 was released on February 4, 2022 and it was entitled "Meet The Coopers."   Here is how the episode was described- Kellye and Anthony Cooper are bondsmen in Mount Pleasant, Texas.  They talk about their bonding business and the ways that they keep up with defendants and how they help improve public safety.   Also, their son is a Marine.  When they became military parents, they began looking for ways to support their son.  Kellye created a nonprofit organization referred to as "M.O.M" (Ministering Our Military).   If you are interested in leaning more about this great cause you can visit the website for Mom at (https://www.momtx.org/) or by visiting their facebook page Ministering Our Military. Wounded Warrior Team Wins PBT Sponsored Skeet Shoot

  PBT recently sponsored its first ever skeet shoot competition at its annual meeting.  Bondsmen across the state and across the country were invited to put together teams for the competition.  All the team slots were filled and the competition was fierce.   Glenn and Zina Meeker, owners of AAA Bail Bonds and Texas Bail Bonds, in Seguin, Texas put together several teams.   One team included their part-time employee Joe Lopez.   Joe is a veteran who spent 9 years in the Army, where he served his country proudly.    While serving in Iraq, Joe was badly burned over 36% of his body among other injuries including PTSD.   Joe  explained that after 9-11 he was drawn to the military.    He was drawn to stand up for his fellow countrymen and do something to respond to the heinous acts that took place that day.    He strongly believed that as a first generation American, he needed to do his part in his American story and fight for freedom.    Joe spends a lot of his free time working with other

  Welcome to Our New & Renewing Members: The Professional Bondsmen of Texas, an association, was established in 1970 as the Texas Association of Professional Sureties to support and assist bondsmen in the advancement of their business. In 1978, the name was changed to the Professional Bondsmen of Texas. For over thirty years the membership, comprised of men and women in the bail bond business, have worked diligently to protect the eighth amendment and the American Constitution Bail Provisions.  Additionally, the right to a surety bond is the only release mechanism that is constitutionally protected by the Texas Constitution.  This means that while other forms of release can be restricted by the Texas Legislature, the use of surety bonds cannot be prohibited in Texas without a constitutional amendment passed by Texas voters. Episode 25- The Bail Project v. Illinois Commissioner of Insurance

The final 2022 episode of The Bail Post was released on December 31, 2022.   A Bail related case was argued before the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals on December 7, 2022.  The Indiana State Legislature passed a bill that placed restrictions on a charitable bail funds' ability to post bonds for defendants charged with crime of violence or charged with a felony and have a prior conviction for a crime of violence.  The bill passed the Indiana Legislature and was scheduled to go into effect July 1, 2022.  The Bail Project filed suit in federal court attempting to keep the new law from going into effect.  On this episode of the Bail Post, find out the arguments raised by the Bail Project against the statute.  Also, listen to a summary of the oral argument before the court of appeals.  If you would like more information on this case, you can listen to the oral argument before the Seventh Circuit by  CLICKING HERE .
