Discredited Bail Algorithm Still Being Pushed to Make Bail Decisions


Jeff Clayton, the Executive Director of the American Bail Coalition has an article that was published on August 4, 2020 in the Daily Journal/California Journal.  The article addresses how jurisdictions continue to push to use a discredited algorithm even though it has been rejected by science, empirical studies and by the very technology companies who use such tools on an every day basis.

Bail Fund Supporters Pull Back Support

The Massachusetts Bail Fund is a charity that pays the bail for prisoners who can’t afford it. The nationwide protest movement spurred by the killing of George Floyd in Minnesota has brought a flood of donations, empowering fund officials to pay much higher bails than they ever could before. But the group is facing backlash from its own supporters after it posted $15,000 bail to release a Level 3 sex offender who then allegedly raped and tried to strangle a Quincy woman within three weeks. Shawn McClinton had two previous convictions and a pending rape charge when the group freed him from the Nashua Street jail in July. On Friday, a student group at Boston University canceled a fund-raising concert for the Bail Fund scheduled for Aug. 7, saying they did not realize that the charity was freeing people accused of serious crimes. “We apologize for our ignorance about the Mass. Episode No. 74- Study: Defunding the Police Increase Murders Especially for Minorities with Guest Dr. Ben Hansen

Dr. Benjamin Hansen is the W.E. Minor Professor of Economics at the University of Oregon.  He is also the head of the Economics Department.  He Graduated from Birmingham Young University in 2004 with a B.A. in Economics.  He received his M.A. in Economics in 2005 and his PhD in Economics in 2009 from UC Santa Barbara. Dr. Hansen co-authored an article that is the subject of this episode of The Bail Post.  The citation for the article is:  Chalfin, Hansen, Weisburst and Williams, "Police Force Size and Civilian Race,"  American Economic Review:  Insights 4 (2); 139-58 (2022).
