Upcoming First Ever PBT Digital Day at the Capital

 


The Chair of the the Professional Bondsmen of Texas Legislative Committee has announced that his committee is planning its first ever Digital Day at the Capital.  The Committee has concluded because of the pandemic and the rules of certain offices, PBT wants to ensure the protection of our elected officials and our members.  Therefore, in addition to our members of the legislative committee who will be traveling to Austin each week, the committee will be holding its "Day at the Capital" digitally.  

What is a "Day at the Capital?"  

This is one or more days designated by the Legislative Committee where we ask our members to travel to Austin to meet with our elected officials to discuss bills that affect the industry.  We normally concentrate on the members of committees who will here our bills.

How Does Your Participation Help?

If you have a personal relationship with your elected officials you can help.  You know them and can schedule meetings with the representative or senator or we can use your name to schedule a meeting.  You can go to these meetings with members of the legislative committee and introduce us to your represenative or senator.  Then the PBT legislative committee member can discuss the specifics of our issues with the purpose of the meeting.  The most common question we get is that our members are afraid they will have to talk on the issues.  Be assured that a member of the committee will go with you to the meeting and you can feel confident in talking as much or as little as you are comfortable.  

Your participation is crucial to getting PBT in the door to tell our story.

How Does a Digital Day at the Capital Differ?

It requires even more planning.  We have to approach offices for appointments for zoom meetings or conference calls, etc.  

Currently we are focused on the House "Criminal Jurisprudence Committee."  If you live in the district of one of the following members of the committee and you believe that you can assist us in speaking to one or more of these representative please reach out to us.  The members of this committee are as follows:

The Texas Legislature is heating up.  The House will be considering multiple bail reform bills on April 6, 2021.  More information will be coming in the near future.  We anticipate that we will also be having a call to action on that day as well.

Good People, Good Food, Good Conversation and Good Competition- PBT's Upcoming 2024 Spring Fling

Wednesday: April 10 - 12 is the PBT 8th Annual Spring Fling.  Festivities will begin on Wednesday with the Annual PBT Golf tournament.  Additionally, as teams are playing golf, another PBT team will be preparing a feast for Wednesday evening.  Late Wednesday afternoon PBT will celebrate the victors of the golf tournament with its annual cook out dinner.  This is a great time to mingle with other bondsmen, our lobbyists and our surety partners as we have fun celebrating all things Texas. Additionally, PBT invites local law enforcement members to join in the fun. This year, Wednesday evening will see a new element to the celebration.  PBT is sponsoring its first ever steak cook off  competition.  PBT currently has thirteen entries who are willing to put their reputations on the line to find out who can cook the best steak as selected by our blue ribbon panel of judges.  The cooks will be performing under the harsh lights (and harsh jokes) of all the spectators supporting and heckling the

The Pendulum of Justice: Let ‘em out, Lock ‘em up

  Over the past decade we have witnessed a giant swing of the pendulum in the criminal justice system from tough on crime policies to soft on crime policies and back again. These erratic swings have been created by knee jerk reactions by legislators to fix what they refer to as problems and inequities in the criminal justice system. Unfortunately, these fixes have consistently failed, in fact, creating even larger imbalances that then need another fix which then also goes too far…and so on and so on. For example, for many years we heard cries from activist groups that “jails are overcrowded.” They claimed we had too many people in jail for low level crimes and the only reason they were there was because they could not afford a bail bond. The Bail Post Episode No. 52: The Legacy of Daves v. Dallas County

The United States Supreme Court denied the petition for cert. filed by the plaintiffs in Daves v. Dallas County in January.  In February, the United States Supreme Court filed another petition for cert. filed in Little v. Doguet from Louisiana on a similar issue.  Therefore, the Daves v. Dallas County case has finally been concluded.  On this episode of The Bail Post we discuss the legacy of this case and the other important case called ODonnell v.
