New Jersey- No Bail Reform In This Court; Judge Orders Accused Shooter Held

 


A state court judge in Paterson has refused to release a Midland Park man charged in a Prospect Park shooting.

That defendant, Rahjshone Newkirk, 23, and borough resident Tylaire Clark, 22, had been sought by police after two people reported being shot at on Hopper Street around 6 p.m. Feb. 2, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Prospect Park Police Chief Ammen Matari said in a joint release.

Their vehicle was struck, but the victims’ weren’t wounded, they said.

Borough police nabbed Newkirk on North 8th Street last Thursday, May 12. 

Despite a state bail reform law that has forced the release of various types of offenders, Superior Court Judge Joseph Portelli ordered that Newkirk remain held in the Passaic County Jail following a first court appearance on Wednesday, May 18.

Clark was arrested on East Main Street on Tuesday, May 17. He has a first court appearance scheduled for May 23.

Both men face weapons-related charges in addition to the attempted murder count.

Trying to Understand Bail Reform and Cashless Bail in the Age of Online Misinformation

In today's digital landscape, identifying the truth about topics like bail reform and cashless bail can be challenging due to widespread disinformation, misinformation, and propaganda. In a recent article in AIA Surety's Insight newsletter their Vice President of Communications, Eric Granof, discusses how much of the information consumers digest comes from internet searches, particularly Google.  Someone asks a question and Google searches the web for the answer and aggregates the best results based on its algorithm.  The problem with this is that Google is not an expert on everything like people expect.  It is simply feeding up what its algorithm believes is the best answer rather than objective truth. On August 22, 2025, Iryna Zarutska was killed at the East/West Boulevard station on the Lynx Blue Line, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Zarutska, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee who had fled her country because of the Russian invasion, was stabbed from behind three times while seated on the train.  She did everything right.  She and her family immigrated to the United States legally.  They had a sponsor.  She was attending college and was working at a pizza shop.  At the time of the stabbing she was traveling home after work. US Senators Call For Investigation of Charitable Bail Organizations

  Republican senators demand a government investigation into taxpayer money used to fund charitable bail organizations that free accused criminals from jail before they go to court.  Sen. Mike Braun, Indiana, and Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, Kentucky, wrote a Tuesday letter to the U.S. Government Accountability Office asking the nonpartisan fact-finding body to investigate bail service providers. “We are deeply concerned by the prospect that taxpayer dollars are being allocated to nonprofit entities which post bail for individuals, but are not held responsible to the same standards of traditional bail agents within their territory,” the senators wrote in a letter addressed to the GAO.
