The Bail Post Podcast- Episode No. 11- Officer Griffith Discusses New Report Regarding Harris County Misdemeanor Bail Reform


 

The Houston Police Officers Union recently issued a report addressing how misdemeanor bail reform was working in Harris County.  The report has some jaw dropping numbers:  76% failure to appear rate, 16% overall appearance rate, 72% of cases are dismissed and 176% growth in the backlog of cases over 10 years.

Office Griffith discusses the report, the district attorney's report issues last year stating some of these same things and the monitor's report which is issued every 4 months and says that misdemeanor reforms are working.  Why are the numbers so different in the monitor's report?  Listen to learn more.

  Over the past decade we have witnessed a giant swing of the pendulum in the criminal justice system from tough on crime policies to soft on crime policies and back again. These erratic swings have been created by knee jerk reactions by legislators to fix what they refer to as problems and inequities in the criminal justice system. Unfortunately, these fixes have consistently failed, in fact, creating even larger imbalances that then need another fix which then also goes too far…and so on and so on. For example, for many years we heard cries from activist groups that “jails are overcrowded.” They claimed we had too many people in jail for low level crimes and the only reason they were there was because they could not afford a bail bond. Meet the New President of PBT- Irma Montemayor

Is 2024 the Year of the Woman for the Professional Bondsmen of Texas?  At the recent annual meeting, Irma Montemayor was elected president of PBT.  She will serve for the next two years.  She is only the third woman to be elected President.  She has been involved in the bonding industry since she was 18. "It is my goal to continue to build on the legacy those before me have formed through hard work and dedication.  I pray for the wisdom in all my decisions and pledge to seek guidance and advise from those willing to collaborate in order to continue making PBTx the model association for the rest of the  Country.  God Bless the great State of Texas!"
