Democrats are Clueless About Crime

Why are Democrats expected to lose in the Nov. 8 elections? When the dust clears, people may look back at the answer Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) gave on crime during her debate against her Republican opponent, Rep. Lee Zeldin.

"Halfway through the debate," Zeldin complained, "she still hasn't talked about locking up anyone committing any crimes."

Hochul, who as governor has the power to remove the many New York district attorneys currently refusing to enforce the law and causing crime to spike (in New York City especially), responded by simply dismissing the issue out of hand. She asserted that there is no crime problem and that the system is working fine, and then she added, "I don't know why that's so important to you."

This answer encapsulates everything that is wrong and out of touch about today's Democratic Party. It explains why Hochul is on the edge of losing a seemingly unlosable election and also why Democrats across the nation are staring down one of their worst results in decades.

First, Hochul's remark is particularly egregious because of whom she was addressing. Zeldin was physically assaulted onstage at a campaign event over the summer, and the man who assaulted him was immediately released thanks to New York's extremely lenient and controversial cashless bail law. Hochul's answer only underlined the fact that New York's crime has gotten so bad that even her campaign opponent cannot go out and campaign safely. Also, the attack on Zeldin shows that in Hochul's New York, even violent criminals get the revolving door treatment at the jailhouse.

More broadly, Zeldin's experience is a lot like that of his fellow New Yorkers. Until recently, New York City was relatively crime free for such a large city. Now, videos of assaults on the subway, along with spiking crime statistics, are showing the public that this has ceased to be the case. The reason? New Yorkers got complacent. They elected too many liberal Democrats who passed brainless criminal justice policies, such as cashless bail. They also have a governor (although they did not elect her) who allows DAs to stay in office even though they refuse to prosecute serious crimes. These DAs, such as Manhattan's Alvin Bragg, view criminals as the real victims in society and refuse to lock up the bad guys like they are supposed to — you know, like they used to do when New York was a much safer place.

On a national level, Democrats are treating this issue exactly the same way as Hochul. Citizens feel physically unsafe, arguably the greatest motivator possible for a voter, and Democrats just don't care. They want to change the subject. Or even worse, they accuse the opponents who hold them accountable or even the voters of being racist, often using their own media allies as proxies. Democratic politicians who treat their constituents in this manner deserve to be voted out of office — every single one of them. Fortunately, on Nov. 8, many of them will be.

Democrats have made their bed and now must lie in it. In 2020, they almost universally embraced the defunding of police departments across the nation based on a false racial justice narrative. Hoping to change the subject from voters' actual top concerns — crime and inflation — they decided to make their 2022 campaign all about abortion and the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

That was their choice, and the voters will soon have theirs.
