2023 Annual Meeting of the Professional Bondsmen of Texas Sets Another Record for Attendance



The PBT Annual Meeting was held last week in San Antonio, Texas.  The meeting had record attendees, record vendors, and demonstrated that PBT has outgrown its space for the meeting.

The them for this years meeting was the "Thin Blue Line" to support law enforcement.  There was a panel discussion about Border Security and it had representatives from our county sheriffs, the DPS and a retired home land security representative.  The presentation was an eye opener if you are truly concerned about border security.

There was also a presentation about the most recent Texas legislative session from representatives of the PBT- Legislative Committee and lobbyists.  

There was a live recording of the PBT Podcast The Bail Post talking about the "Inside Scoop About Bail Bond Boards."  PBT's podcast is closing out Season 2 and is now ranked in the top 10 of the 60 Best Criminal Justice Podcasts.

Next, there was a presentation from Eric Granof with AIA and Mike Whitlock with American Surety about what was going on outside of Texas.  

There were multiple panel discussions regarding topics such as "Magistrating 1 Year After SB 6" and a panel discussion regarding PBT's Click to Dial and Call to Action System that it developed which is portable and can be used by any other state or group.

Finally, there was a presentation regarding the new case handed down by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals- Continental Heritage v. State.

The PBT Annual Meeting is a huge endeavor.  It takes many different people to work together as a group to pull off a good meeting.  PBT has been setting new records every year for the last three years.

Good People, Good Food, Good Conversation and Good Competition- PBT's Upcoming 2024 Spring Fling

Wednesday: April 10 - 12 is the PBT 8th Annual Spring Fling.  Festivities will begin on Wednesday with the Annual PBT Golf tournament.  Additionally, as teams are playing golf, another PBT team will be preparing a feast for Wednesday evening.  Late Wednesday afternoon PBT will celebrate the victors of the golf tournament with its annual cook out dinner.  This is a great time to mingle with other bondsmen, our lobbyists and our surety partners as we have fun celebrating all things Texas. Additionally, PBT invites local law enforcement members to join in the fun. This year, Wednesday evening will see a new element to the celebration.  PBT is sponsoring its first ever steak cook off  competition.  PBT currently has thirteen entries who are willing to put their reputations on the line to find out who can cook the best steak as selected by our blue ribbon panel of judges.  The cooks will be performing under the harsh lights (and harsh jokes) of all the spectators supporting and heckling the

The Pendulum of Justice: Let ‘em out, Lock ‘em up

  Over the past decade we have witnessed a giant swing of the pendulum in the criminal justice system from tough on crime policies to soft on crime policies and back again. These erratic swings have been created by knee jerk reactions by legislators to fix what they refer to as problems and inequities in the criminal justice system. Unfortunately, these fixes have consistently failed, in fact, creating even larger imbalances that then need another fix which then also goes too far…and so on and so on. For example, for many years we heard cries from activist groups that “jails are overcrowded.” They claimed we had too many people in jail for low level crimes and the only reason they were there was because they could not afford a bail bond. This narrative became the fuel behind an entire criminal justice movement that most of us know as “bail reform”. The blame for overcrowding was put solely on people’s ability to pay bail. The Bail Post Episode No. 52: The Legacy of Daves v. Dallas County

The United States Supreme Court denied the petition for cert. filed by the plaintiffs in Daves v. Dallas County in January.  In February, the United States Supreme Court filed another petition for cert. filed in Little v. Doguet from Louisiana on a similar issue.  Therefore, the Daves v. Dallas County case has finally been concluded.  On this episode of The Bail Post we discuss the legacy of this case and the other important case called ODonnell v.
