Chicago Has Become a Santuary City for Criminals

To refer to Chicago as a haven for criminals is an understatement. Today, despite Mayor Brandon Johnson’s pious announcements to the contrary, Chicago remains one of the most dangerous cities in America. While there are underlying causes of crime — such as failing schools, underinvestment, and weak economic possibilities — that the city has failed to address, the undeniable truth is that there are fewer and fewer consequences for increasingly serious crimes. Meanwhile, a powerful "Criminal Industrial Complex" profits from this system — one that makes Chicagoans and visitors less safe every day.

Chicago is the crime capital of the nation, leading all U.S. cities in both murders and mass shootings year after year. If Chicago were a state, it would rank second only to California in mass shootings.

In 2023, 76 school-age children (17 years and younger) were  urdered in Chicago — more than in any other city. Chicago also leads the nation in murders  committed by youth.

While city leaders boast about a decline in murders over the past two years — a trend mirrored nationwide — Chicago still ranks third from last among major cities with populations of 250,000 or more. Meanwhile, overall violent crime continues to rise.

The city is also facing a domestic violence crisis. . .

SJR 5 is a proposed constitutional amendment to expand preventative detention to give judges the discretion to deny bail for certain third time felons. SB 40 states that no government funds may be given to a non-profit for the purposes of posted bail by a charitable bail fund. SB 9 is a major bill that made up of changes to the bail process, adds new charges to the list of offenses to which no personal bond may be granted and makes minor changes to the charitable bail fund statute. The Bail Post Podcast- Episode No. 61- United States v. Lozier- Recovery Agent Conviction Reversed With Guest Cal Williams

On this episode of The Bail Post we discuss an important case involving a recovery agent who was licensed in Louisiana.  A defendant who was charged with a misdemeanor failed to appear for court and then went to the state of Missouri where she was staying at the time she was filed.  The recovery agent and his partner traveled to Missouri, took the defendant into their custody and began traveling back to Louisiana.  The defendant was eventually dropped off at a sheriff's office in Mississippi.  The two recovery agents were charged with federal kidnapping charges because they crossed state lines.  One of the recovery agents plead guilty and was given probation.  The other went to trial and was convicted and given a sentence of 10 years.   The case was appealed because of the jury instructions given by the trial court.   Join us to find out why the court of appeals reversed the case and what the future holds for the recovery agent.
